Waitarere Fishing Club Newsletter
as printed in the Chronicle 15th Feb 08

Waitarere Fishing Club’s February meeting was held at the SLSC on Thursday 14 February, with 80 members in attendance.

Murray Hanlon opened the meeting with a reminder of our Annual Fishing Tournament to be held 22 and 23 March (Easter weekend) and the need for those boating to be safety conscious and encourage the use of life jackets for all members of their crew. Fishing in the area has been slow, however there have been some good catches recently which may indicate the fish will arrive for Easter.

Guest speaker Ron Parkin of Genoese Foods, based in Levin was welcomed to the club. Ron then spoke about establishing his business in Levin some years ago, with Pesto his first product. His range has continued to grow successfully and although Pesto remains a prime product, he has now added other products, such as Tapenade’s and herbs in oil. Ron also brought along samples of this high quality local product and tasting was enjoyed by all. 3 Raffle prizes were proved by Genoese and the lucky winners will undoubtedly enjoy the prizes. Thank you Ron, for making your time and products available.

Ian and Diane Larkin’s cooking demonstration followed and featured various uses for Pipi’s, including an appetising soup, and a very tasty pate type product. The fish was also delicious, especially paired with some of the Genoese products. Thank you to Ian and Diane, no doubt your recipes will be tried very soon.

Wayne Moxham spoke briefly on baiting up for those land based fishermen competing in the upcoming Fishing Tournament.

We are currently establishing an email mailing list, and a thank you to those that provided their addresses at the meeting. Creating this mailing list will allow us to communicate quickly, share information, provide reminders, and for those members who do not receive a copy of the Chronicle, the opportunity to read the article. If you would like to be included on the mailing list, please email us at waitarerefishingclub@gmail.com with your name and email address.

Also, don’t forget, if you want to check the weather at the beach, just log onto www.waitererebeach.net.nz , select ‘Beach Cam’ and you will have a view of the current sea conditions. This website also provides information on upcoming events for the fishing club, just click on ‘Fishing Club”.

Next meeting will be on Thursday 20 March 7.00pm at the SLSC. Presenters will be Mike Hayes from Foxton Coast Guard speaking on boating safety and use of Marine Radio Plus Phil Kettle, Tackle Tactics on what you will need to catch the big ones and Wayne Moxham on surfcasting techniques, all good information for the Easter Fishing Tournament.

Stay tuned for the next Newsletter!!!
