Gutted!!!
Chronicle Pik

1am on Monday morning, the 21st July, a Levin policeman was driving past the Waitarere Beach 4 Square on patrol. He noticed smoke coming from the building and called it in. By the time Fire Brigades from Waitarere Beach, Levin and Foxton attended the fire, it was well ablaze. The shop didn’t burn to the ground, but was completely gutted.

‘Fire service Investigator Murray Kidd said it looked as though it was started by a fault in the shops electrical fuse board. Whether it could be weather related had been looked at he said. “Basically there had been a lot of lightning and thunder down in the area at the time when the fire happened. These things have been taken into consideration”…Shop Owner Frank Taylor said the start of the fire was captured on the stores security cameras, making insurance investigations simpler. “That’s the advantage of having it on film, there was no question of how it started” he said. The cost of lost stock and damage to the shop was not available, he said…The Waitarere fire crew did a great job…we were lucky we have as good fire service…they really did a great job”

Brigade Deputy Chief Roger Nichol said the fire was well underway when the brigade arrived. A call was made for back up and Foxton, Levin and the districts rural brigade answered. “It took us several hours to bring it under control…to stop it spreading to other buildings. Luckily it was in the western area of the shop, furtherest from other buildings.” Horowhenua mail Thursday 24th July.’

Frank has also indicated that once everything has been cleaned out, the remainder of what was left would be demolished to make room for a new shop, open hopefully at Christmas for the summer peak season.

In the meantime, you can get the Newspapers from Drinas café, the one at the rear of the carpark, east side of what is left of the Four Square. The mail delivery will continue and plans are underway for alternative temporary premises. Stay tuned for updated information.

We’re really going to miss your fresh bread and croissants Frank. All the best for the renovations…if it had to happen, thank god it was during the quieter winter season…
Good luck frank

By the way...

Check out the photos of the freak storm that happened the same week!!! Mixed with a huge high tide, it really was a day to be careful if you were going for a nosey at the beach entrance...isn't that right Murray!!!!!!
(
He almost lost his ute in the tide and he was parked up
on the tar seal of the entrance-way)
